Ft. Collins Engagement Photography: Beth + Jason

A couple of weeks ago, Jason and I got together with Beth & Jason for an engagement photography session – our 10-10-10 wedding couple! It was a lovely Colorado day (we decided to start earlier in the day to avoid the evening thunderstorms…) and our couple brought along their cute little dog, Mia, which continues our “dogs in engagement photography” series :-) Beth & Jason are so cute together. They make each other laugh all the time and you can tell they love being together. They explore new hiking trails together and since they live in Ft. Collins, it’s pretty easy to find great locations! Together, with Mia, they are a great little family and we can’t wait for their October 10th wedding at the Brown Palace Hotel!

Before we started our engagement photography session, we met Beth & Jason for a mid-afternoon drink at one of their favorite pubs, CooperSmith’s, in their hometown of Ft. Collins. We strolled through downtown Ft. Collins taking some candid and fun engagement pics. They then took us to Lory State Park, near Arthurs Rock, for a stroll along their favorite hiking trail. We love being able to shoot engagement photographs in locations that are meaningful to our clients. That way, their engagement pictures are more than just “a nice picture in a pretty location”… the pictures are part of their story. That’s also why we enjoy having their dogs come for part or all of the engagement session – their dogs are part of their life now, too.

Denver Wedding Photography: Kurt + Maggy

The Rocky Mountains provide an amazing backdrop for wedding photography. Jason and I tend to stay busy in the “hills” for many of our weddings. We don’t photograph quite as many weddings in Denver as we would like to.  Kurt and Maggy’s beautiful morning ceremony in Arvada gave us the opportunity to photograph an amazing day in the Denver area. Their ceremony was at Faith Bible Chapel in the heart of the foothills and their reception was at the always lovely Manor House in Littleton.

It was raining off and on throughout the ceremony, but briefly stopped afterwards. We quickly drove to Van Bibber Trail a few blocks away to photograph formals in case the weather didn’t hold out until we made it to the Manor House. (that’s Denver weather for ya… wait 10 minutes and it’ll change) Luckily, the sun arrived and we were able to capture some fun group photos at the Manor House, too. Kurt and Maggy’s day was tailored to their style; completely relaxed and shared with the people who mean the most to them. Very cool. These two have one of the sweetest relationships we’ve ever seen. They compliment each other beautifully and it was such a joy to see their love for each other on their wedding day.

Isn’t Maggy’s wedding gown gorgeous? Well, great story. She fell in love with this Yonko Yoshioka gown online (don’t we all do that, ladies?) but she wasn’t convinced she wanted to spend so much on her gown. When she went to try on gowns at Anna Be she had an open mind, but still wanted to see “the” gown on. The saleslady told her (you’ll never believe this) that a bride ended up not wanting the Yonko Yoshioka gown after she had it altered and Maggy could have it for the sample price. Maggy put it on and it fit perfectly. Even better, on her wedding day, she was stunning in it.

Just a quick note before this last image/collage – The wedding party was hilarious. They were spontaneous, adventurous, and crazy in front of the camera. There were also a half-a-dozen friends with cameras trying to get in on the action during formal shots. We’re always okay with people snapping pictures… as long as we’re able to capture the bride and groom looking their best and enjoying themselves.

Why You Should Hire A Wedding Specialist

You would never hire a brain surgeon to do a knee replacement!

Today, I completed all of the pre-certification steps necessary for our son’s surgery on Friday morning. His tonsils have to come out. They are the source of a lot of pain and missed school days this year. It’s a simple procedure, however, I certainly can’t do it myself. In fact, I love our son’s general practitioner, but I don’t trust him to do the surgery. I trust Dr. Nigil, an ear, nose, and throat specialist. I trust a man that has performed hundreds (possibly thousands) of tonsil and adenoid surgeries. I trust him because he is a specialist. His specific training, focus, and experience is exactly what is necessary to make sure that the surgery is successful. I trust a specialist with one of the most precious people in my life.

This leads me to a very important fact about wedding photography. Do not hire a generalist to do specialized work. Do not hire a professional photographer, hire a professional wedding photographer. It is dangerous to trust a general photographer to manage all that needs to be captured during a wedding day. A brilliant landscape photographer is not the right fit for a wedding. A studio portrait photographer is not the right fit. A good friend with a fantastic camera is not the right fit. Wedding photography requires specialized knowledge and experience about how weddings work, what to expect, what goes wrong, how to adapt, how to move quickly, how to manage people (and families), how to light anything, how to handle weather, and how to make the bride and groom feel complete at ease.

Do the right thing, hire a specialist.
