Urban Engagement Session in Denver | Joanne+Steve

Gina’s Take:
There are places that are great for engagement photos – and places that are not. Industrial areas are great. Places where we hear bone saws are not. We were walking around downtown Denver with Joanne and Steve and happened upon this really cool alley. Of course, we had to explore the photographic possibilities it might have! Jason stayed at a distance to shoot while Joanne, Steve, and I walked through to the other side of the alley. We walked straight into a terrible, vomit-inducing smell. Through an open door, we saw workers chopping what we later decided (gag me) could only be animal parts. We all made it to the other side, rallied, and got some sweet shots! The lesson of the day is explore, cautiously!
Jason’s Take:
I’m always anxious before I have my picture taken. A few weeks ago, our good friends Josh and Drew (who both happen to be great photographers) took Gina and I out for a shoot. Just for fun. Gina and I are always looking to add a few photos to our walls. I wasn’t worried about the photos, or that we wouldn’t look good. There’s just that challenging feeling of being in the spotlight – center stage. I deeply prefer to be on the other side of the camera. It feels safer there.
I have to hand it you, our fantastic couples, who have the courage to get out there in front of the camera (with a beer or two in you or absolutely sober). You are all remarkable. Stepping boldly into the intimacy of being photographed, you allow yourselves to feel vulnerable, close and affectionate with each other. You trust us. I thank you for the opportunity.
Cheers to you Joanne and Steve! Courageous, trusting, affectionate, and playful. Thank you!

Denver Botanic Gardens Engagement Photography: Kari + John

Last week, Jason and I (Gina), had an engagement photography session with John, Kari, and her beautiful daughter. The evening started out with a family shoot at the Denver Botanic Gardens. It was an amazing, gorgeous day and the gardens look fantastic right now. As photographers in Denver, one thing we love about the Botanic Gardens is how many different spots there are to shoot. We spent nearly the entire time in the Japanese (I think – the sign was in another language!) Gardens with their family and had an awesome time. They were all so natural in front of the camera and Kari’s daughter ate it up!
After capturing some great family pics, Kari’s daughter was picked up by a friend and we did the second half of the engagement session with just Kari and John. We strolled through the gardens and headed to Cheesman Park. Talk about a fun couple! They are beautifully affectionate and, on more than one occasion, they were having so much with each other that they didn’t realize when we’d stopped taking pictures! It is always a lovely time for us as photographers when a couple loves interacting with each other.
Thanks Debbie with Save the Date Events for referring such a great couple over to us! We are excited to photograph their Evergreen Lake House wedding in just a few weeks.

Denver Engagement Pictures: Liz + Brent

We (Jason and I) had a great evening engagement photography session with Liz, Brent and their two Jack Russell Terriers, Mississippi and Vegas. Yep, a dog named Vegas. Don’t you love this couple already? Little miss Mississippi is named after his favorite (understatement) college team, the University of Mississippi. They are such fun dogs! As an aside, I have to say, Brent and I bonded over our love of FarmVille… Liz and Jason also bonded over their both being perplexed as to why we love FarmVille!
We started out their session at City Park, in Denver, which looks amazing with all the rain this spring and did some family shots with the pups. Liz and Brent are so easy to work with… and so fun together! At one point they climbed into a giant flowerpot because, well, if there is an empty 4-foot flowerpot you have to get an engagement picture in it, right? The night was beautiful as we headed to their second location. We planned their engagement session later in the evening so we could also shoot at the BlueBird Theater to get couple portraits under the lit-up sign. Their first date was at a concert and it was fun taking engagement pictures at a location that that felt so nostalgic to them. So romantic! We can’t wait to photograph Liz and Brent’s wedding in Vail, Colorado this Fall.
