Engagement Photography on Blake Street | Stefanie + Jon

Gina’s Take:
Despite my dislike of overcast skies for weeks on end, a well-placed, umbrella-filled afternoon can be perfection. There is something uber romantic about a city, wet pavement, sloshing tires, and a sweet couple under an umbrella. I could be romanticizing this “city rain” because Jason asked me to marry him on a rainy New York City street and that, of course, was one of the best days, ever. However, I’m sticking to my conclusion: rain in the city = romantic (mind you, not a torrential downpour…). Stefanie and Jon’s engagement shoot had just enough rain to require an umbrella at times, and it was a blast shooting with a prop
I have to give Stefanie kudos because she is not a major fan of middle of the sidewalk, downtown PDA, but she plunged in and did it. Besides, her coy smile up at Jon was magic.
Jason’s Take:
Jon is a beer connoisseur. Therefore I’m a fan of Jon. I love spending time getting to know our clients. The more time we spend just chatting during the initial meeting and before or after an engagement shoot, the more we feel acquainted with who our couples are and what they’re all about.
Stefanie and Jon live in Ohio and are getting married at Arrowhead Golf Course (with the amazing Ann Marlin as their event designer) in August. They happened to be in town for some wedding planning on a rainy weekend. So, we asked Stephanie and Jon if they’d simply like to mosey around Blake Street for their engagement shoot. No specific locations, no specific agenda… just walk around, talk, and shoot from time to time. Perfect recipe. The rainy engagement shoot was refreshingly fun, simple, laid back and topped of with a good beer at Falling Rock Tap House (75+ beers on tap and 130 bottled beers).

Gina’s favorite image (below): I don’t know why I love this shot… it could be simply because of the umbrella, or because it’s black and white, or because I remember the feel of the rain at that moment. Oh well, compelling reason or not, they’re adorable and it’s my fav.
Jason’s favorite image (top of page): Love it. I love how they laugh together.

Denver Wedding at the Curtis Hotel | Jennifer + Joe

Gina’s Take:
I’m a run-of-the-mill American with no particular cultural history to call my own. My life only has brief glimpses of my heritage. Povitica and Shortbread at Christmastime are a few of the hallmarks. Jennifer and Joe, on the other hand, have a rich Korean heritage woven through the tapestry of their lives. Their wedding day was no different! They skillfully combined the “American” wedding with what they call “old school Korea”. We enjoyed every second being submerged in and capturing wedding traditions we don’t see every day.
Jason’s Take:
My heritage is fairly generic, too. A few years ago, however, my mom was reunited with her birth mother after 50 years of separation. I was able to meet my newfound grandma too… it was cool to become connected to another part of my genetic history as well as the fact that she is fully Scottish and her family actually has a town and castle in Scotland named after them. Maybe that’s the reason that I could watch Braveheart weekly while sipping a MaCallan (cask strength) single malt in my hand.
I love the invitation to photograph rich traditions, intricate relationships, and incredible families. Jennifer and Joe’s culture of respect and hierarchy, though unfamiliar, was engaging and refreshing. Their wedding in Denver at the Curtis Hotel was, for lack of better words, perfect. Be sure to take a peek at their Engagement Session at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Jason’s Favorite Picture: Love the image below on the right – props to Gina for seeing the reflection of buildings in the marble wall. Lovely!

Gina’s Favorite Picture: I love the picture below (bottom-right). Jennifer’s mom, totally full of glee, wishing for many grandchildren.
