Two RSS Feeds from One Blog
Setting up your blog-site to have multiple and unique feeds.
This morning I discovered a simple way to create multiple feeds within WordPress. WordPress is setup, by default ready to create as many different rss feeds as you could want. Why would anyone want multiple, or different, feeds available on their blog?
I can tell you why I want multiple feeds for my site. As a wedding photographer, I want my site to reflect my wedding and engagement photography, awards, reviews, pricing, etc. I also want to share professional advice, resources, and random tech info with my fellow wedding professionals. However, when my wedding clients subscribe to my blog, I don’t want their feed reader to be updated by wedding pro resources that are be published. Rather, I want only wedding and engagement photography related posts to be updated in their feed reader. WordPress is capable of doing this for me already!
How to create multiple feeds from your wordpress site:
1. Name your categories or tags specifically as you would like them to show up in your feed.
2. Open your site and click the link to category of your blog that you want to make a new feed from.
3. Add /feed/ to the end of the address in the address bar. (example: http://www.jason-gina.com/category/pro-resources/feed/)
4. Load this web address you have just created.
5. You should now be looking at the RSS Feed of that category/tag.
Additional info:
If you want to take this a step further, you can set up an additional FeedBurner feed using the address you just created.
If you want to exclude posts from any category in your primary feed (i.e. jason-g.com/feed/), you have to get a bit more technical. I excluded the Pro Resources category from my primary feed so that my wedding clients, they don’t receive pro resource tips in their feed.
Here’s a helpful link to the WordPress Codex Page specifically dealing with this… it’s actually pretty simple, just follow the instructions to the tee.
