Caitlin and Justin hired us a few months ago to photograph their Colorado destination wedding in July. We did not actually meet during the booking process because they live in eastern Kansas (no convenient meeting spot). We simply conducted everything online and they booked us sight unseen. This relaxed and very cool couple were in town last week for a Colorado ski trip and, although the weather was wonderful for skiing, it wasn’t ideal for engagement photography! We watched the weather and agreed to meet mid-week (the only sunny day thrown in before 8″ of snow) in Evergreen for their engagement photography session followed by a couple of cold ones together.
As we arrived at the Evergreen Lake House, we were hoping to be able to identify this couple from their Facebook photos. It was actually easy to identify them – they were the only couple in the parking lot looking for us, and we were the only people carrying professional cameras (dead giveaway). Once we met up we realized that we hadn’t actually spoken over the phone! It felt kind of like arriving for a blind date… the anticipation, the excitement… too fun.
After a quick introduction, we got busy taking advantage of the beautiful Colorado sunlight. We usually like to meet a couple for a quick coffee or glass of wine before a shoot to help them feel comfortable. This time, however, the sunlight suggested we shoot first. Caitlin and Justin were naturals. We simply strolled around the wilderness area near the lake and asked them to be themselves. We prefer to photograph a couple interacting with each other, rather than overly posing them and creating awkward images. This couple radiated when they were engaged with each other. Their ability to completely forget that they had two photographers orbiting them was truly special. Not only were we impressed with how relaxed they were in front of the camera, we were duly impressed that they had no goggle tan after a full week on the slopes… now that takes skill!
We spent less than an hour shooting and were all ready to grab a beer at The Little Bear Saloon. Yep – a Colorado Saloon. We had a blast getting to know Justin (an architect and construction tool enthusiast) and Caitlin (a physicist, seriously – a real live physicist). We followed up our brews with a couple of after-dark engagement photos just outside the saloon.
