Turtle Bay Resort Wedding Photography | Lacey + Nick

Jason’s Take:
I arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii at 2:30 on Monday afternoon with Julie Gambrell (fantastic wedding designer – Classic Creations). Honestly, all I wanted was Chipotle. I quickly discovered that the nearest Chipotle was an ocean away. After a few deep, calming, breaths of warm Pacific air, I settled on the fact that it is ‘okay’ that there’s not my perfect restaurant in Hawaii. Rather, on the North Shore, there were these little trucks (or permanently placed school busses) with the world’s best fresh shrimp plates. I couldn’t believe how satisfying a plate of shrimp could be, served out of the back of a bus, after a surfing lesson.
On another note… During the surfing lesson, while I was paddling back out to the breakers, I spotted a monk seal right next to me and my board. Surreal to say the least! When I told Gina about the seal spotting (instead of being excited) she gasped, paused, and said, “You know… sharks love seals.” Gina may not have entered the water. Period. She has a fierce fear of sharks (yet watches every episode of Shark Week). The last picture of this post is of a monk seal that came up onto the beach during the trash the dress session. I’m pretty sure Gina would have locked herself in the car right about then.
Lacey and Nick were the most gracious couple I think I’ve ever met. When Gina and I travel for weddings, we give our time to the couple. Whatever they want/need – we’re committed to it. During this solo trip, Lacey and Nick continually checked in to make sure I was having a wonderful time and made sure that I took all the time in the world to explore the North Shore.
Thank you – Lacy and Nick. I had a wonderful experience in Hawaii – and have even fonder memories of our times together on the beach, documenting the beginning of your new chapter in life.
Thank you – Julie Gambrell (Classic Creations). We share some really fun experiences spotting turtles, exploring shrimp stands, surfing, walking in volcanic craters, and of course Skyping home to our families while driving on the North Shore highway.
Gina’s Take:
Sharks terrify me.

Urban Engagement Session in Denver | Joanne+Steve

Gina’s Take:
There are places that are great for engagement photos – and places that are not. Industrial areas are great. Places where we hear bone saws are not. We were walking around downtown Denver with Joanne and Steve and happened upon this really cool alley. Of course, we had to explore the photographic possibilities it might have! Jason stayed at a distance to shoot while Joanne, Steve, and I walked through to the other side of the alley. We walked straight into a terrible, vomit-inducing smell. Through an open door, we saw workers chopping what we later decided (gag me) could only be animal parts. We all made it to the other side, rallied, and got some sweet shots! The lesson of the day is explore, cautiously!
Jason’s Take:
I’m always anxious before I have my picture taken. A few weeks ago, our good friends Josh and Drew (who both happen to be great photographers) took Gina and I out for a shoot. Just for fun. Gina and I are always looking to add a few photos to our walls. I wasn’t worried about the photos, or that we wouldn’t look good. There’s just that challenging feeling of being in the spotlight – center stage. I deeply prefer to be on the other side of the camera. It feels safer there.
I have to hand it you, our fantastic couples, who have the courage to get out there in front of the camera (with a beer or two in you or absolutely sober). You are all remarkable. Stepping boldly into the intimacy of being photographed, you allow yourselves to feel vulnerable, close and affectionate with each other. You trust us. I thank you for the opportunity.
Cheers to you Joanne and Steve! Courageous, trusting, affectionate, and playful. Thank you!

Denver Engagement Photos | Kim+Adam

Gina’s Take:
Aahhhh… Colorado. This engagement session was during late summer/early fall when the days last forever and the sun turns everything into a golden brown color, like honey. What a marked difference the weather is from that day to today! This morning is full of crunchy snow underfoot and frosty breath… our kiddo’s bundled up like little marshmallow people. The best part is that regardless of the conditions out, the sun shines on. A gloomy day or two followed by glorious, glorious sun. This weather is one of the many reasons I love, love, love Colorado. Now, having grown up here, I may be biased, but I don’t care. It’s the best. Four distinct seasons, and none of them unbearable or harsh. Every time the weather changes I give a little cheer and plan our seasonal fun! Today, in the snow, squirt bottles of colored water to decorate the abundant (and quickly fleeting) canvas of white!
Jason’s Take:
Gina and I just got home from a three day road trip. Yes, a road trip between snow storms across Eastern Colorado and through most of Kansas. We traveled to the home of Kansas University – Lawrence, Kansas. Jordan and Michelle invited us to see a KU Jayhawks basketball game – and we took them up on the offer. Having never attended a college basketball game before, apparently we went straight to the top. The passion and uncompromising unity of the fans was unforgettable (and quite loud!). The experience was incredible. Rock Chalk Jayhawks!
I shared this story – traveling quite a distance to do something fun together – as a lead in to Kim and Adam’s engagement session. They traveled over four hours for their engagement session in Denver. It was a perfect afternoon for sun-drenched goodness! There are times when we’re hired just for engagement pictures. Kim and Adam are getting married (and already chose a local wedding photographer) in 2012 and sought wedding photographers in Denver for their engagement session. We’re thrilled they chose us, drove three hundred miles in their half-ton truck, and spend the afternoon in the sun with us. It’s always such a privilege to capture a snapshop of a couple’s journey – if only for just an afternoon – and leave them with something timeless.
